About Schlenkerla
Since 1405, one room at the foot of Bamberg cathedral has poured beer that tastes of woodsmoke. The building was the “House of the Blue Lion”; today it is Aecht Schlenkerla, the most famous smoke-beer tavern in Germany, sitting on Dominikanerstraße in the UNESCO-listed old town. There is no bar tap — the Rauchbier comes straight from an oak cask in the entry hall.
This is a beer-led house first and a kitchen second, and it makes no apology for it. Plan the rest of the town from the Bamberg dining guide, or carry on to the other historic brewery tap at Klosterbräu.
The Brewery & Kitchen
Schlenkerla is run by the Trum family, now in the sixth generation under brewmaster Matthias Trum. The signature is not a plate but a glass: Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen, a dark lager brewed with malt smoked over beechwood and tapped by gravity from a wooden barrel — a Seidla (half-litre) runs about €4.
The food is built to match the smoke. The Schäuferla, a roast pork shoulder with crackling, gravy, sauerkraut and a potato dumpling, is the order to get; the Bierhaxe, a pork knuckle braised in smoke-beer sauce, and the smoked-malt Bratwurst round it out. Mains sit around €10 to €16. For the full effect, eat the Schäuferla with the Märzen and let the two smoke flavours meet.
The Room
The interior is a warren of low-ceilinged, wood-panelled Stuben that have served drinkers for centuries: long shared benches, vaulted nooks, a steady hum of locals and travellers elbow to elbow. It is loud, warm and communal rather than intimate. No dress code — walk in as you are. In good weather the crowd spills into the lane outside, glasses in hand.
Best for a Team Dinner
Book — or just walk into — Schlenkerla for a team dinner because it does what few rooms manage: it puts a group on shared benches, keeps the beer and the Schäuferla coming without ceremony, and costs little enough that nobody studies the bill. Arrive before 18:00 to claim a table for a larger group, order rounds of the Märzen from the cask, and let the communal seating do the rest. A lone traveller is just as welcome at the shared tables — it is a natural solo-dining stop.
Not for
Not for a quiet, romantic dinner or anyone who dislikes smoke — the Rauchbier tastes emphatically of campfire, the benches are shared and loud, and the room is built for company, not for two people leaning in.
Frequently Asked
Is Schlenkerla worth visiting?
Yes — it is one of the essential beer experiences in Germany. Aecht Schlenkerla has poured smoke-beer in the same old-town Bamberg building since 1405, taps its Rauchbier from oak casks, and serves honest Franconian food like the Schäuferla for little money. Go once for the history, the cask Märzen and the communal room; skip it if you dislike smoky flavours.
Do you need a reservation at Schlenkerla?
For one or two people, usually not — it runs on walk-ins and shared tables. For a group of six or more, call ahead or arrive early in the evening, as the historic Stuben fill quickly. The cask room and the lane outside absorb the overflow on busy nights.
What should I order at Schlenkerla?
Start with the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen from the cask, then the Schäuferla — roast pork shoulder with crackling, sauerkraut and a dumpling. The Bierhaxe (smoke-beer pork knuckle) and the smoked Bratwurst are strong alternatives. The smoke in the food and the beer is meant to be tasted together.
How much does a meal at Schlenkerla cost?
It is genuinely inexpensive. A Seidla (half-litre) of Rauchbier is around €4, and main dishes run roughly €10 to €16. A full dinner with a couple of beers rarely climbs far, which is part of why it works so well for a group.
Is Schlenkerla good for a group or team dinner?
Very. The long shared benches, the brisk service and the low prices suit a hungry table, and the cask Rauchbier keeps the night moving. Arrive before 18:00 to seat a larger group — see more options on the best restaurants for a team dinner guide.
Mostly walk-in with shared tables. Call ahead for groups of six or more.
