About Kampung Daun

Kampung Daun opened in 1999 as a “Culture Gallery & Café” in Cihideung, in the cool Lembang highlands north of Bandung, and it has grown into one of the area’s best-known destination restaurants. The site is built like a small Sundanese village: more than forty private bamboo saung huts spread across roughly two and a half hectares of terraced gardens, linked by stone paths and threaded with trees, lanterns and a small waterfall. You come as much for the place as the plate. For the wider picture, see our Bandung dining guide.

The Kitchen

The cooking is traditional Sundanese, served family-style to share. The dish to order is the Nasi Kukus Legend, steamed rice folded with anchovies, basil, chilli and petai and wrapped in banana leaf, alongside the Liwet Kampung Daun Gurami — a sharing nasi liwet built around grilled or fried gourami that runs about IDR 210,000 to 220,000 for a table. Add gurame goreng sambal kecombrang at around IDR 135,000, sate maranggi and a hot bandrek to finish. Individual plates start as low as IDR 8,000 and most stay under IDR 115,000, so a full evening lands around IDR 100,000 to 250,000 a head. There is no celebrity chef here; the draw is honest highland Sundanese food in an extraordinary setting. Compare it with the modern Sundanese cooking at Bodas in the city.

The Room

There is no single dining room — the “room” is the valley. Each party gets its own raised bamboo saung, open to the night air, lit by lanterns and warmed by the higher-altitude chill that makes Lembang feel a world away from Bandung’s heat. The sound of the waterfall and the gardens carries between huts, traditional music plays softly, and the huts nearest the water are the ones to ask for. It is romantic, family-friendly and unhurried in equal measure; just expect a walk between the entrance, the kitchen and your hut. For a more conventional heritage room, compare Plataran Bandung.

Best for a Celebration

Book Kampung Daun for a birthday or family celebration because the setting does the heavy lifting: a private lantern-lit saung among the trees, the cool Lembang air, and a waterfall in the background turn an ordinary dinner into an evening people remember. Take a larger hut for a group, pre-order the sharing nasi liwet and the gourami, and arrive before dusk to watch the lanterns come on. It also suits a relaxed first date or a low-key team dinner in nature. See more restaurants for a birthday.

Not for

Not for a quiet, polished tasting menu or a quick business lunch: this is a sprawling open-air destination where rain, distance between huts and slow service come with the setting.

Frequently Asked

Is Kampung Daun worth visiting?

Yes, for the setting above all. Kampung Daun is a Sundanese culture village opened in 1999 in the Lembang highlands, where you dine in private bamboo saung huts scattered among trees, lanterns and a small waterfall. The Sundanese cooking is solid rather than refined, so come for an unhurried evening in nature with family or a group rather than for a polished tasting menu.

What should I order at Kampung Daun?

Order the Nasi Kukus Legend, steamed rice with anchovies, basil, chilli and petai wrapped in banana leaf, and the Liwet Kampung Daun Gurami, a sharing nasi liwet with grilled gourami priced around IDR 210,000 to 220,000. Add gurame goreng sambal kecombrang at about IDR 135,000 and sate maranggi to share, and finish with a hot bandrek by the waterfall.

How much does dinner at Kampung Daun cost?

Plan on roughly IDR 100,000 to 250,000 per person. Individual dishes run from about IDR 8,000 to IDR 115,000, plain nasi liwet is IDR 35,000, and the larger sharing packages such as the Paket Kampung run up to about IDR 685,000 for a full table. Drinks and the saung setting are the main extras over a city restaurant.

Do you need to book a saung at Kampung Daun?

Yes, especially at weekends and on public holidays. The private bamboo saung huts are limited and the most scenic ones near the waterfall go first, so reserve ahead and ask for a hut by the water. Weeknights are quieter and easier to walk in, but the kitchen and the climb between huts both slow down when the village is full.

Is Kampung Daun good for a celebration?

Yes. The lantern-lit huts, the cooler Lembang air and the waterfall make it a memorable setting for a birthday or a family gathering, and you can take a larger saung for a group. It is less suited to a formal business dinner. See our birthday dining guide for more celebration tables.
