About Nectari

Jordi Esteve trained at the Hofmann school in Barcelona, then opened his own room on Carrer de València, a few minutes' walk from Sants station, and has held a Michelin star there since 2012. That is fourteen consecutive years of the star in a city where they come and go. Nectari is not a destination in the pilgrimage sense. It is a small neighbourhood restaurant that happens to cook at one-star level, and the nine-course tasting is €86 — a fair number for what arrives.

The Kitchen

Esteve cooks modern Catalan from seasonal Mediterranean produce, working with small suppliers and changing the menu as the market changes. The cooking is technical but not showy; there is no foam-for-its-own-sake here. The dishes that have survived across menus tell you what the kitchen believes in: the foie gras with eel, a sweet-and-savoury pairing that he has refined rather than abandoned; the sticky rice with lobster, which reads like a Catalan answer to risotto; and the topinambur cream with prawns and seasonal mushrooms, earthy and restrained.

The format is a single nine-course tasting at €86, with a shorter market menu from around €65 and an optional pairing drawn from a Catalan-and-French list. That is the value argument made plainly: Esteve spends on the plate, not the dining room. A one-star tasting at this price in Barcelona is rare, and it is the reason to come. The weakness is consistency of ambition — a few courses play it safe — but nothing on the menu is a misfire, and the red tuna tartare with avocado is a clean, accurate plate.

The Room

Small and low-key. A handful of tables, low lighting, and a noise level that lets two people talk without leaning in. There is no grand entrance and no view; the work is on the plate. Dress is smart-casual — you will not feel underdressed in a jacket or over it without one. Tables are close enough to feel intimate rather than exposed. It is the opposite of a scene, which is the point.

Best for a First Date

Book Nectari for a first date for three reasons: the room is quiet enough to actually hear each other, the tasting menu gives a long evening a built-in rhythm so there are no awkward gaps, and €86 a head is a confident gesture that doesn't tip into showing off. It also works for a low-key business dinner. Pair it with our Barcelona dining guide, the city's tables to impress clients, and rooms for closing a deal in Barcelona.

Not for

Not for a big group or a loud celebration — the room is small and quiet, built for two people paying attention to the plate, not a table of eight ordering bottles. Skip it if you want spectacle.

Frequently Asked

Is Nectari worth it?

Yes, if you want a Michelin star without the theatre or the bill that usually comes with one. Jordi Esteve has held the star since 2012 and cooks modern Catalan from a small neighbourhood room near Sants. The nine-course tasting is €86, which is honest money for a one-star kitchen in Barcelona. Go for the cooking and the quiet, not for a scene.

How much does dinner cost at Nectari?

The full tasting menu runs €86 per person, with a shorter market menu from around €65. Wine pairings push the figure higher, and the list leans Catalan and French. It is one of the better-value one-star meals in the city, which is the point: Esteve spends on the plate rather than the dining room. Reserve a few weeks ahead for a weekend table.

What should I order at Nectari?

Take the full tasting and let the kitchen lead. The dishes to look for are the foie gras with eel, the sticky rice with lobster, and the topinambur cream with prawns and seasonal mushrooms. These are the plates Esteve has kept across menus because they work. The menu changes with the season, so trust the market dishes over anything you came in expecting.

Is Nectari good for a first date?

Yes. The room is small and quiet, the lighting is low, and the tasting menu gives a long evening a structure without demanding silence. It is intimate rather than grand, which suits a date better than a loud destination room. Book early and ask for a corner table.
