About Skykitchen

Skykitchen is the unlikeliest Michelin star in Berlin: one floor below the rooftop bar of the Vienna House by Wyndham Andel's hotel, on the 12th storey of a tower in Lichtenberg, looking out over the East Berlin skyline that most fine-dining guides never reach. Alexander Koppe took over the kitchen in 2012 and won the star in November 2014; the room has held one star every year since, eleven in a row through the 2025 guide. Dinner is a five-course set menu, the "Voyage Culinaire," at around €189 a head — a serious price for a serious kitchen in a part of the city nobody expected to find one.

The Kitchen

The signature here is a crossover that Koppe defined and that the kitchen still runs: fine-dining technique pointed at Berlin's own appetites, Mediterranean and Asian accents folded into northern-European produce. The "Voyage Culinaire" menu reads like a tour with the city always in the window — skrei with celeriac and char caviar, flank steak with roasted vegetables and bone marrow — alongside a full vegetarian menu of equal length. Since 2023 the kitchen has been led by Sascha Kurgan, a native Berliner, who has kept both the star and the street-food-meets-tasting-menu identity that earned it. It is precise, generous, and never fussy for its own sake.

The Room

Fifty-five seats wrap the 12th floor with floor-to-ceiling glass on every side, so the view — the TV tower, the Friedrichshain rooftops, the eastern sprawl out toward the old DDR districts — is effectively a sixth course. The mood is calmer and more grown-up than the louder rooftop bar above it: low light in the evening, well-spaced tables, and a service team that paces the five courses without rushing. Smart dress suits the room. Arrive before sunset in summer and the city does half the work.

Best for Impressing a Client

Skykitchen is the Berlin table to book when the evening has to land. The star signals seriousness, the 12th-floor view gives the night a sense of occasion no ground-floor dining room can match, and the set-menu format keeps the pacing in the kitchen's hands so you can keep the conversation in yours. It works just as well for a milestone birthday or a high-stakes first date. For more rooms at this level, see our Berlin dining guide and the close-a-deal directory.

Not for

Not for a quick, casual or budget dinner, and not for anyone after à la carte — the format is a long, set five-course menu near €189, and the hotel-tower setting means a lift ride, not a street-level walk-in.

Frequently Asked

Does Skykitchen have a Michelin star?

Yes. Skykitchen holds one Michelin star, first awarded in November 2014 and retained every year since — eleven consecutive years through the 2025 guide. It is one of the highest-rated kitchens in East Berlin and the only star at this address.

Where exactly is Skykitchen?

It occupies the 12th floor of the Vienna House by Wyndham Andel's hotel at Landsberger Allee 106 in Lichtenberg, on the border of Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg. The dining room is one level below the building's rooftop bar, with panoramic views east across Berlin.

How much is dinner at Skykitchen?

Dinner is a five-course set menu at around €189 per person before wine, offered as the "Voyage Culinaire" or an equivalent vegetarian menu. Service runs Wednesday to Saturday from 6pm, so plan an evening rather than a quick bite.

Who cooks at Skykitchen?

Alexander Koppe built the kitchen and won its star, leading from 2012. Since 2023 the Berliner Sascha Kurgan has run the pass, holding the star and continuing the house style that crosses fine-dining technique with Berlin street-food ideas.

What should I expect to eat?

Expect a tour-style tasting: dishes such as skrei with celeriac and char caviar, or flank steak with roasted vegetables and bone marrow, drawing Mediterranean and Asian accents through northern-European produce. A full vegetarian menu of the same length is always available. See our Berlin dining guide for similar tables.
