About Fancett's

Dan Fancett opened this small bistro on Cambridge's Mill Road in 2021, after he and partner Holly Minns ran the well-regarded North Street Bistro in Norfolk. The format is deliberately tight: a French-rooted prix-fixe menu that is tweaked daily around the best produce in the market that morning.

It has quickly become one of the most respected independent kitchens in Cambridge, recommended in the MICHELIN Guide and the Good Food Guide.

The Kitchen

The cooking is French to the core and generously portioned. The twice-baked cheddar souffle is the dish regulars return for, and the pear tarte Tatin is the dessert to finish on. At lunch the set menu runs in its simplest form — two choices per course — with a few more options at dinner.

Pricing is honest for the standard: a three-course lunch is £29 and a three-course dinner £48. The restaurant is cash-free.

The Room

The room is small, personal and relaxed — a few dozen covers where the kitchen's care is visible from the table. It is the kind of intimate setting that rewards a proper conversation rather than a crowd.

For Cambridge's higher-end tasting-menu experiences, Midsummer House and Restaurant Twenty-Two are the natural step up.

Best for an Intimate Dinner

Fancett's small room and daily prix-fixe make it a quietly excellent choice for a first date or a low-key anniversary — enough polish to feel like an occasion, without the formality of a tasting menu. The £29 lunch is also a smart, unflashy business lunch.

Not for

Not for large groups, a-la-carte grazers, or last-minute walk-ins — it's a tiny prix-fixe room open only Wednesday to Saturday.
