The Kitchen

Botanica is built around the farmers market, which means the menu is never quite the same twice. Heather Sperling and Emily Fiffer, two former food editors, opened it in a converted Silver Lake liquor store in May 2017 and run it as a restaurant and a working produce-and-pantry market under one roof. Executive chef Sergio Ortega, who cooked with Enrique Olvera at Atla before taking over the kitchen, brings real technique and his Michoacán roots to what could otherwise be a salad-bar idea. The cooking treats the vegetable as the main event rather than the protein's accompaniment.

The Turkish eggs are the signature: poached farm eggs over garlicky yogurt with Aleppo-Urfa butter, charred scallions and house cornmeal focaccia, $16 and on the menu for years. The white bean hummus and the seasonal salads change with what the market sends, and the natural-wine list runs through small, low-intervention producers. Los Angeles Magazine named Botanica one of its 10 Best New Restaurants of 2017; it is at 1620 Silver Lake Boulevard.

The Room

The room is bright and plant-filled, the opposite of fine-dining hush: white walls, greenery, big windows, and a market of natural wine and pantry goods along one side. It works as a coffee stop in the morning, a long lunch, and a relaxed dinner from 5:30. Tables are close and the sound is lively rather than quiet; this is a neighbourhood room, not a special-occasion one. Dress is whatever you wore that day. Service is friendly and unfussy, and you can leave with a bottle of wine or a jar from the market on the way out.

Best for a First Date

Book Botanica for a first date because it is low-stakes and easy to talk over. It is bright, casual and affordable, so neither person has to perform; the shareable, vegetable-led plates give you something to pick at and discuss; and the all-day hours mean you can make it a coffee, a lunch or a dinner depending on how brave you feel. If it goes well, the market by the door is a natural excuse to keep the afternoon going. For more, see our Los Angeles dining guide.

Not For

Skip Botanica if you want a quiet, white-tablecloth dinner or a meat-centred meal: it is a loud, casual, vegetable-forward room, and the kitchen is not trying to be a steakhouse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Botanica worth it?
Yes, if you like vegetable-forward cooking done with real skill. Botanica was one of Los Angeles Magazine's 10 Best New Restaurants of 2017 and is run by former food editors Heather Sperling and Emily Fiffer with chef Sergio Ortega, ex-Atla, in the kitchen. It is casual and mid-priced rather than fine dining, so come for thoughtful, market-driven plates, not a formal occasion.

Is Botanica vegetarian?
Mostly, but not strictly. Botanica is vegetable-forward rather than fully vegetarian: produce is the focus and there are many vegetarian and vegan plates, but the menu also includes some fish and meat. Vegetarians and vegans are exceptionally well looked after here, which is rare. Tell the staff your preferences and they will steer you; the kitchen is comfortable building a meatless meal.

What should I order at Botanica?
Order the Turkish eggs, the long-running signature: poached farm eggs over garlicky yogurt with Aleppo-Urfa butter, charred scallions and cornmeal focaccia, $16. The white bean hummus and whatever seasonal salads are on that day are the other reliable picks, and the natural-wine list is worth exploring. Because the menu follows the market, ask what came in fresh.

How much does Botanica cost?
Botanica is mid-priced and casual. Plates start around $16, with the signature Turkish eggs at $16, and a relaxed dinner of a few shared plates plus a glass of natural wine lands well below a fine-dining bill. The attached market lets you spend more on pantry goods and wine to take home. It is one of the better-value serious kitchens in Silver Lake.

Is Botanica good for a first date?
Yes, it is a strong first-date choice. Botanica is bright, casual and affordable, the shareable vegetable plates keep the table busy, and the all-day hours let you scale from coffee to dinner. The relaxed room takes the pressure off, and the market by the door is an easy reason to extend the date.
