About Monsoons

Monsoons sits right on the Indian Ocean beside the Jumba la Mtwana ruins at Mtwapa, a half-hour north of Mombasa down a dirt track off the Malindi road. Run by Italian owners Attillio and Aziza, it is a destination as much for the setting — a Maasai host walks you past the ruins to the sand — as for the food.

The kitchen is Italian-run seafood, built on fish bought straight from the fishermen working the beach. It is unfussy, generous coastal cooking that has built a reputation as some of the best seafood in Kenya.

The Kitchen

The centrepiece is the seafood platter — stacked with lobster, prawns, snapper, octopus and calamari, the catch depending on what the boats have landed that day. One platter for two is famously generous; regulars joke it could feed a family of six. Italian touches run through the menu, from an octopus salad to the day's fish, simply grilled.

Pricing is mid-range for the coast: à la carte starters run roughly KSh 1,400 to 1,500, with the day's seafood platter the thing to share. Because supply is the morning's catch, the menu shifts with the boats.

The Room

The setting is the draw — open-air tables on the beach beside the ancient Jumba ruins, the ocean a few steps away and the whole place small and intimate. It is barefoot-romantic rather than formal, the kind of lunch that becomes the story of a trip.

The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch only, closing in the afternoon, and is closed on Mondays. It is small, so reserving is essential — turn up without a table on a busy day and you may be turned away.

Best for an Anniversary

The beach setting, the ruins and the shared platter make Monsoons a memorable daytime anniversary or first date on the Kenyan coast. The generous seafood and the sense of occasion also make it a fine spot to mark a birthday.

Not for

Not for diners wanting dinner, a quick city meal or anything formal — Monsoons is a lunch-only beach restaurant down a dirt road, closed Mondays, built around the day's catch.
