About Broussard's

Broussard's opened in 1920, when Joseph Broussard — trained as a chef in Paris — and his wife Rosalie set up in her family's Borrello mansion at 819 Conti Street in the New Orleans French Quarter. More than a century on, it remains one of the Quarter's grandes dames, pairing French-Creole cooking with chandeliered dining rooms, a landscaped courtyard and the Empire Bar. The kitchen is now led by Executive Chef Jimi Setchim.

For the Quarter's other historic French-Creole tables, compare the 1840 Antoine's, the jazz-brunch landmark Arnaud's and the century-old Galatoire's. Broussard's belongs to the city's French and fine-dining scene.

The Kitchen

Under Executive Chef Jimi Setchim the kitchen holds to the French-Creole tradition Broussard's helped define — founder Joseph Broussard claimed to have invented dozens of dishes, including a crepe Suzette soufflé. Today the menu runs from a courtyard brunch of slow-cooked pork belly with fried green tomatoes and poached eggs to evening French-Creole classics in the dining rooms. Expect an upper-mid to fine-dining spend; brunch plates run around $30, with dinner and the Empire Bar adding to the occasion.

The Room

The setting is the draw: a sequence of elegant, chandeliered dining rooms inside the historic Borrello mansion, opening onto a lush, fountain-set courtyard that is one of the prettiest brunch spots in the Quarter. The Empire Bar handles cocktails. Service is polished and old-school, and the rooms lend themselves to milestones and private events. You can request a courtyard, private-room or quieter-room seat when you reserve.

Best for an Anniversary

Chandeliered rooms, a fountain courtyard and a century of occasion dining make Broussard's a natural table for an anniversary or a proposal in the French Quarter. The grandeur and private rooms also suit a dinner to impress clients.

Not for

Not for a quick, casual or budget bite — Broussard's is a formal, historic French-Creole room with prices and a sense of occasion to match.
