About Hawksmoor

Hawksmoor began in London in 2006 and built a cult following for charcoal-grilled, properly dry-aged British beef before crossing the Atlantic. The New York room opened in September 2021 inside the landmarked United Charities Building on East 22nd Street, steps from Gramercy Park. Founders Will Beckett and Huw Gott kept the formula — great steak, a serious bar, an unstuffy room — and it has become one of the best modern steakhouses in our New York dining guide.

The Kitchen

The kitchen, opened under head chef Matt Bernero (formerly of Minetta Tavern) and overseen by group executive chef Matt Brown, sources all-natural beef from family farms across upstate New York, Pennsylvania and New England, seasons it simply with flaked sea salt, and sears it over live-fire charcoal. The headline cut is the Côte de Boeuf, a dry-aged bone-in rib carved for two, but the menu also runs sustainable seafood, oysters and a proper roster of sides. The Sunday Roast is a genuine event, and the sticky toffee pudding is the dessert regulars come back for.

Steaks generally start around $60 and climb with the larger sharing cuts, putting Hawksmoor in line with the city’s top steakhouses while undercutting some on the bar and seafood. For more of the city, read our New York guide, compare the Korean steakhouse COTE, or browse our picks for a team dinner.

The Room

Hawksmoor occupies a grand, high-ceilinged room with restored woodwork, leather banquettes and a long, well-run bar that anchors the front. The sound level is convivial rather than thunderous, so a table can talk business without shouting, and the spacing is generous enough for a large party. Lighting is low and warm, the dress code lands at smart-casual, and the bar pours some of the better cocktails of any steakhouse in town. It feels like a proper occasion room without the old-school steakhouse stiffness.

Best for a Team Dinner

Book Hawksmoor for a team dinner or a deal for three reasons: the sharing cuts, led by the Côte de Boeuf, are made for a table that wants to order family-style; the room is large and comfortable enough for a group to settle in; and the bar gives the night a proper opening act. A typical scene: a long banquette table, a round of martinis, then bone-in rib carved down the middle for everyone to share. Reserve ahead for larger parties. Not for

Not for vegetarians or a delicate budget: Hawksmoor is a charcoal-and-beef steakhouse where the best cuts and the bar add up fast, and meat is the main event.
