"SoNo's most distinctive new table — book Himalaya for handmade momos, Himalayan music and a menu Connecticut just voted its best new restaurant."
About Himalaya SoNo
Himalaya SoNo opened on Washington Street along South Norwalk's restaurant row and was named Connecticut Magazine's Top New Restaurant of 2026. It is more than a kitchen: a restaurant, bar, music venue and retail shop built around the food and culture of Nepal, Tibet and Northern India. The room doubles as a gallery of handmade Tibetan clothing, jewellery and crafts, all for sale, and traditional live music plays four nights a week.
The Kitchen
The dish regulars order first is the handmade momos — steamed Himalayan dumplings — followed by the almond-and-cashew korma and the full range of regional curries. The tandoor turns out marinated meats and shrimp, and the kitchen keeps the crowd-pleasers honest: chicken tikka masala, spicy vindaloo, noodle and rice dishes, and an unusually wide vegetarian menu. Most mains land in the $$ range, making it an easy weeknight or group table. The cooking is generous and traditional rather than reinvented.
The Room
The space is larger and livelier than a typical neighbourhood Indian room, hung with Tibetan textiles and craft pieces that are part decor, part shop. Live Himalayan music plays Thursday through Sunday from 6:30pm, which sets the mood for a long, social dinner rather than a quiet one. Service is warm and happy to guide first-timers through the menu. It suits families, groups and anyone curious about the region, with the music nights bringing the most energy.
Best for a family dinner
For a relaxed family dinner, a group night or a first date with something to talk about, Himalaya SoNo brings food, music and a room full of craft. A natural birthday and first-date table on the SoNo strip.
Not for
Not for a hushed, formal dinner — on music nights Himalaya is a busy, social room with live performance, better suited to groups and curious diners than a quiet tete-a-tete.
