Six weeks. That is how far ahead the west-facing tables go in July and August, and the gap between a sunset seat and an inside one here is the whole ballgame. The Athenian House sits in Imerovigli, the highest village on the caldera at 260 metres, on the Fira–Oia footpath where the day-tripper crowd that mobs Oia never really arrives. Dimitris Skarmoutsos founded it in 2016; the 2026 season is its tenth. It carries 50 Best Discovery status and took Best Luxury Scenic View Restaurant in Santorini at the 2025 Luxury Lifestyle Awards. Menus run €150 to €200 a head before wine.

The Kitchen

Skarmoutsos is a known quantity in Greece — a television chef and cookbook author who can actually cook, which is rarer than it sounds. He treats Santorini's volcanic produce the way a Burgundian treats his vines: the white aubergine, the cherry tomatoes, the capers all come from the island and dictate the week's menu. The dish to order is the signature lamb moussaka, built on Santorini white aubergine with tahini and a feta béchamel and plated with two lamb chops — a rebuild of the canteen cliche that argues, convincingly, for its promotion. Finish with the house baklava: a chocolate and peanut-butter version under salted caramel and pistachio that has no business working and does. Four formats are on offer — Grand, Discovery, Pescatarian and à la carte — so a table can run from a five-course commitment to something lighter without the kitchen dropping its standard. Book the Grand if you came for the food; the Discovery if you came for the view and want to keep talking.

The Room

It is a terrace, cut into the cliff in narrow tiers, with Skaros Rock dead ahead to the west and the volcano filling the bay. Tables are spaced for two people leaning in, not for a party of eight. Conversation-easy — the only competition is the wind, and there is no music fighting you. Lighting goes candle-low after the sun drops. Smart casual; nobody will turn you away for an open collar, but trainers read wrong against the setting. Aim for the front row of tables and ask for it by the sunset hour, not the table number — staff seat by arrival, and the second tier loses the foreground rock.

Best for a Proposal

Book this terrace for a proposal because the three things that wreck the moment elsewhere are all handled here: the view is the most complete on the island, the room is quiet enough to say the words and be heard, and Imerovigli’s elevation keeps the Oia selfie-crowd out of your photographs. Time the reservation for ninety minutes before sunset so the question lands in the gold light and dinner carries you through dusk. Tell the team in advance — they will hold the best tier and pace the courses around the moment without turning it into a performance. It also reads right for a marquee first date or a client you want to floor.

Not for

Skip it if you want to eat after dark for the food alone — you are paying a clear premium for the sunset, and a 9pm winter table loses the view that justifies the €150–€200 spend. Not a budget Greek dinner; Metaxi Mas does that better for a third of the bill.

How to Book

Reserve direct through the restaurant’s site or by phone — there is no Resy or Tock window to game here. For July and August sunsets, six weeks out is the realistic lead; quieter shoulder weeks in May, early June and late September open up inside a fortnight. State plainly that you want a west-facing table at the sunset seating, and if it is an occasion, say so — this is the rare room where telling them helps rather than inflates the bill. Walk-ins are a non-starter in season.

Questions Diners Ask

Is The Athenian House worth it? For a sunset table in season, yes — you are buying the best caldera view on Santorini plus a serious kitchen, which most of the island’s view restaurants cannot pair. At €150–€200 a head the value sits in the setting, not the plate, so book it for the occasion rather than as a pure food pilgrimage. Skarmoutsos’s lamb moussaka and the house baklava are the dishes that earn the night.

How hard is it to book? Hard for the right table. The restaurant takes reservations direct, and west-facing sunset seats in July and August go roughly six weeks ahead. Shoulder-season weeks — May, early June, late September — can be had inside two weeks. There is no booking platform to exploit; phone or email the restaurant and be specific about the sunset seating.

What should I order? Lead with the signature lamb moussaka on Santorini white aubergine with feta béchamel, and finish on the chocolate-and-peanut-butter baklava under salted caramel and pistachio. If you want the full statement, take the Grand menu; the Discovery format is lighter and leaves more room to talk. The wine list leans hard on Santorini Assyrtiko — let the floor steer it.

What is the dress code? Smart casual, genuinely — no jacket required, but the cliffside setting punishes a sloppy look. Think linen and good shoes rather than trainers and shorts. Evenings on the terrace cool fast once the sun is down and the wind picks up, so bring a layer; the view is worth staying out for past the first chill.

Is it good for a proposal? It is one of the two or three strongest proposal rooms on Santorini, and arguably the best if you value a quiet table over Oia spectacle. Book the sunset seating, request a front-tier west table, and tip the staff off in advance — they will pace the courses around the moment. The elevation keeps crowds out of your photographs.
