About The Peat Inn

The Peat Inn occupies an 18th-century former coaching inn at the crossroads hamlet of Peat Inn, a short drive from St Andrews in Fife. Chef-proprietor Geoffrey Smeddle and his wife Katherine took it on in 2006, and won a Michelin star in 2010 that the kitchen has held ever since. A history graduate before he was a chef, Smeddle cooks thoughtful, seasonal modern Scottish fine dining rooted in the produce of the East Neuk and the Highlands.

The Kitchen

Chef Geoffrey Smeddle builds his menus around the day's best Scottish produce, handled with restraint and precision. Expect hand-dived scallops, Highland game and venison, East Neuk seafood landed nearby at Anstruther, and a cheese trolley of British and Scottish farmhouse cheeses. The format runs from an à la carte to a multi-course tasting menu, with a serious, well-chosen wine list. A three-course dinner sits around £65 and the tasting menu around £100, top ($$$$) bracket for the region and fair for a long-held star.

The Room

The room is warm and quietly grown-up: low ceilings, candlelight and the bones of an old inn rather than a styled dining room, with a comfortable lounge for aperitifs. Service is gracious and unhurried, paced for a long dinner. Because it is six miles out of St Andrews, many guests book one of the eight suites and stay the night — the easiest way to enjoy the wine list. Reserve well ahead, especially around golf season.

Best for an anniversary

For an anniversary, a proposal or a milestone dinner, The Peat Inn is a Fife destination: the historic room, the long-held star and the gracious service all build the occasion, and a suite upstairs turns it into a night away. A memorable anniversary and proposal table, and a special first date worth the drive.

Not for

Not for a casual quick bite or those without a car — The Peat Inn is a destination Michelin table six miles from St Andrews.
