The Corviglia Lunch Terrace

Paradiso Mountain Club sits at 2,181 metres on the Corviglia ski mountain above St. Moritz. The format is the European Alpine mountain club at its most realised: an enormous south-facing sun terrace, an interior dining room scaled for the season, an afternoon DJ programme that has made the room one of the most-photographed après-ski destinations in the Alps.

The cooking is mountain-club international: pasta, grilled meats, fresh seafood at altitude, the considered salads that the lunch-terrace format demands. The wine list runs through Champagne, Italian whites, and a careful Swiss selection. The cocktail programme rises to the room's reputation — a careful Bellini or a properly-mixed Negroni at 2,000+ metres in fresh Engadin sunlight.

What to Order

Pasta handled simply and well — the kitchen makes some of it in-house. Grilled meats and fish from the open kitchen; the Alpine cuts are the obvious order. Salads are taken seriously and well-priced for the format. Champagne by the bottle is the on-mountain ritual; the bar handles classic cocktails with confidence. Reservations are essential in high season.

The Setting

The terrace is the experience. South-facing, unobstructed views across the Engadin valley, the surrounding 4,000-metre peaks providing the frame. From late morning through the afternoon ski-down, the terrace is the social anchor of Corviglia. The DJ programme begins around 1pm and runs through lunch service.

Best Occasion: Birthday

A St. Moritz birthday at Paradiso is one of the most-photographed celebration moves in winter Europe. The setting — sunlit terrace, surrounding peaks, the Alpine valley below — provides the kind of frame that birthday dinners are designed around. The Champagne programme handles the celebration; the kitchen handles the meal; the DJ provides the energy. For a winter birthday, few rooms in any resort match this.
