About Le Ciel by Toni Mörwald

Le Ciel occupies the seventh floor of the Grand Hotel Wien on the Kärntner Ring, equal parts dining room and observatory: floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Ringstrasse, the Staatsoper and, on clear evenings, the wooded Wienerwald beyond. Chef Toni Mörwald, who built his name at his Lower Austrian estate restaurants before taking the room in Vienna, holds one Michelin star here, with four toques and 17.5 of 20 from Gault Millau behind it.

For the wider ladder of the city's starred tables, start with the Vienna dining guide and our ranking of Vienna's best restaurants to propose in 2026.

The Kitchen

Mörwald cooks French in method — stocks reduced over days, saucing of real depth — but Austrian in spirit, leaning on Alpine herbs, Danube fish and Lower Austrian game and vegetables from producers he has used for years. The coriander-rolled venison is the dish reviewers keep naming; the raw Arctic char with sliced radish is a frequent opener. The forty-variety cheese trolley, mostly Austrian and French, is the finest in the city and needs strategy to approach.

Menus run €86 for four courses, €96 for five and €106 for six, with a Surprise Menu at €140 and wine pairings on top; the weekday Grand Lunch is three courses for €53. Where Le Ciel sits among Vienna's French tables and fine-dining rooms is a fair debate; on game and cheese, near the top.

The Room

The name means sky, and the room earns it: pale walls, a high ceiling washed in blue, and the whole of the Ringstrasse laid out through the glass. Tables are spaced for conversation rather than spectacle, service is formal without stiffness, and the light at dusk does most of the work. Dress is smart, jackets common. The summer terrace handles aperitifs and dessert courses; the main room runs year-round.

Best for a Proposal

Book Le Ciel to propose because the setting carries the moment: Vienna's grandest architecture framed in every window, Mörwald's cooking delivered with precision, and corner tables facing the Staatsoper directly. Reserve six weeks ahead and ask for a window. See the global list of rooms built for a proposal for how it compares.

Not for

Not for a casual Viennese night out: this is a jacket-and-tasting-menu hotel dining room where the bill climbs fast once wine pairings join the €140 Surprise Menu.

Frequently Asked

Does Le Ciel by Toni Mörwald still hold a Michelin star?

Yes. Le Ciel carries one Michelin star plus four toques and 17.5/20 from Gault Millau, making it one of the highest-scored hotel dining rooms in Vienna. Chef Toni Mörwald oversees the kitchen on the Grand Hotel Wien's seventh floor. For the wider field of starred rooms in the city, start with the Vienna dining guide.

How much is dinner at Le Ciel in Vienna?

Tasting menus run €86 for four courses, €96 for five and €106 for six, with a Surprise Menu at €140; wine pairings are charged on top. The weekday three-course Grand Lunch at €53 is the cheapest way into Mörwald's cooking. Compare it with the city's fine-dining destinations.

Is Le Ciel a good place to propose?

It is among the strongest in the city. The seventh-floor windows frame the Ringstrasse and the Staatsoper, and the corner tables face the opera house directly. Book six weeks ahead and request a window. See the full list of rooms built for a proposal for how it ranks.

What should I order at Le Ciel by Toni Mörwald?

The coriander-rolled venison is the dish reviewers single out, and the raw Arctic char with radish opens many menus. The forty-strong cheese trolley, mostly Austrian and French, is the finest in Vienna and worth saving room for. Meat and game lead; this is not a fish-only table like Konstantin Filippou.

How do I get a table at Le Ciel?

Reserve through the Grand Hotel Wien's dining page or by phone; two to three weeks is usually enough midweek, longer for a weekend window table. Smart dress is expected. Our guide to booking Michelin tables in 2026 maps the wider pattern.
