The building that houses VOLT was constructed in 1928 to serve Kreuzberg's electrical grid. The transformation from infrastructure to fine dining room was never completed in the obvious sense — the high ceilings, exposed brick, and industrial steel framework remain entirely intact, and the restaurant has made no attempt to disguise its origins. This decision, which could easily have produced something cold and warehouse-generic, instead created one of Berlin's most genuinely singular spaces. The Landwehrkanal sits just outside; in summer, the canal-side terrace becomes one of the city's most sought-after outdoor tables.
When VOLT opened in 2011, chef Matthias Gleiß was elected Rising Star of the Year by Berlin's professional kitchen community — a recognition that proved accurate.
