The Restaurant

Donna's Restaurant sits at 9121 Glacier Highway, at the Juneau International Airport end of a small exterior shopping centre, in the same spot it has occupied for more than four decades. It is the diner every city has — and almost no city has at this level of consistency. Breakfast served all day, the same hash-brown portion size for forty years, the same staff recommending the same chicken-fried steak to the same regulars. Donna's is where Juneau eats when Juneau is not performing for anyone.

The menu is American diner in its classical register. Breakfast platters built around three eggs, hash browns, and your choice of bacon, sausage, or ham; biscuits and gravy executed at a level that the national chain breakfast franchises gave up on twenty years ago; omelettes — fluffy, generously filled, folded with the care of a cook who has made tens of thousands of them — and a chicken-fried steak the size of a manhole cover, served under a white peppery gravy that the kitchen has spent four decades not ruining. Lunch and dinner extend into burgers, club sandwiches, and a rotating set of comfort-food specials.

The portions are, in the frequently-used word of local reviewers, "Sasquatch-sized." A single order of hash browns will feed two; an omelette lands on the table covering most of it. Given Juneau's general price level — which runs high, by necessity — Donna's has become the default answer to "where is the most honest bill in town?" The answer is here.

The room is a diner in the literal sense: counter seating, a scattering of booths, airport windows, nothing decorated beyond what a diner has to decorate. Service is efficient and warm in the way that four-decade institutions perfect. Hours are long — Donna's opens at 6:30 am seven days a week and stays open until 8:30 pm Tuesday through Sunday — which makes it the fallback for every traveller stuck at the airport, every state worker starting early, every fisherman coming off a night rotation.

Best Occasion Fit

For solo dining, Donna's counter is one of the most comfortable seats in Juneau. Eat breakfast any time of day, read the paper, refill your coffee, leave. This is solo dining at its least pretentious and most honest — the reason diners as a format earned their place in American eating.

For a casual team breakfast or working lunch with crew or colleagues, Donna's is the correct answer when the group cares about being fed well and not about being performed for. Everyone orders what they want, everyone finishes full, the bill stays defensible, and nobody regrets the decision.

For a no-fuss birthday breakfast with family or longtime friends, Donna's atmosphere welcomes tradition rather than occasion. Order the chicken-fried steak, split the hash browns, have the server bring an extra plate of whipped cream for the table. This is the Juneau birthday that still makes sense in ten years.
