About Monte
Monte was Croatia's first Michelin-starred restaurant, awarded in 2017, and it remains the town's most romantic room. Chef Danijel Đekić runs the kitchen inside the stonewalled courtyard of his birth house, directly under the belltower of the Church of St. Euphemia — the tallest structure in Rovinj and the visual anchor of every postcard ever sent from the town.
Đekić cooks modern Mediterranean with a deep Istrian base. A tartare of Adriatic red tuna with wild fennel and a caper-flower emulsion; house-made gnocchi with Istrian white truffle in autumn; a brodetto-inspired turbot with samphire and a saffron-corn polenta; a signature dessert of Motovun truffle ice cream with olive oil and fleur de sel. The menus run three, four or six courses, and the six-course version is the argument.
The room itself is the point. Candle-lit, vine-walled, open to the Istrian sky — on a clear June night it is difficult to imagine a more atmospheric dinner anywhere in the Adriatic. The wine list is a deep Istrian spine (Matošević, Kozlović, Kabola) with serious Italian and French shelves; pairings are the right call but a single bottle of Malvasia on a warm night is the local move.
Service is old-school Croatian hospitality polished into a Michelin register — proud, unhurried, deeply knowledgeable about every producer on the plate. The kitchen opens out to the courtyard at the start of the evening, Đekić will often walk the room. By the last course, on a clear summer night, the belltower above is lit and every table has gone quiet.
Why It's Perfect for Proposal
Monte is the proposal table of the Croatian coast. The courtyard is open-air, candle-lit, visually unforgettable, and private enough that a quiet moment stays quiet. The menu's length — six courses is about two and a half hours — gives you the arc of an evening rather than a meal. If the proposal needs a room, this is the one. For anything slightly less seismic — a first anniversary, a significant birthday — it still over-delivers.
