The Verdict

CORNER HOUSE occupies a black-and-white colonial bungalow inside the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Singapore Botanic Gardens, and no other restaurant in the city offers this particular combination: a 1910 building surrounded by a hundred-year-old living landscape, serving tasting menus that Chef Jason Tan has named "gastro-botanica" — a cuisine in which botanical ingredients, garden-sourced elements, and the philosophy of living plants inform every preparation on the menu.

The gastro-botanica concept is not a marketing construct. Chef Tan has developed a genuine vocabulary around plant-derived flavours — herb-aged fish, florally infused broths, preparations that use the botanical gardens themselves as a conceptual larder. The tasting menu moves through courses that reference the setting: a smoked preparation recalls the ancient banyans visible from the dining room window; a flower-based dessert sequence celebrates what is currently in bloom in the gardens outside. The cuisine is simultaneously intellectually rigorous and emotionally warm.

The setting is the most extraordinary available in Singapore dining. The bungalow's verandah, which can be used for pre-dinner cocktails, overlooks lawns that recede into primary forest. The dining room — teak floors, high ceilings, ceiling fans, colonial furniture updated with contemporary precision — creates an atmosphere of colonial Singapore that is historically resonant without being nostalgic in a way that excludes anyone. The Michelin star is deserved; the setting is irreplaceable.

Why It Works for a Proposal

Corner House is the proposal restaurant for the guest who wants the setting to do as much work as the moment. The UNESCO Botanic Gardens at dusk, the colonial bungalow with its verandah, the gastro-botanica menu that builds to a botanical dessert sequence — everything about the evening has been constructed to be beautiful. Inform the team when booking. They have accommodated proposals before and will orchestrate the moment within the natural rhythm of the service.
