The Restaurant
Villa Florentine began its life as a 17th-century convent built on the slopes of Fourvière — the hill that the Romans chose for their temple and the city chose for its basilica, the sacred high ground that has overlooked Lyon for two thousand years. The building was eventually converted into one of Lyon’s finest hotels, a Relais & Châteaux property of gardens and terraces and the kind of silence that only height and stone walls can provide. Les Terrasses de Lyon is the house restaurant, and it earns its Michelin star not by competing with the setting but by becoming part of it.
The panoramic dining room is fully glazed on one side, offering an unobstructed view over the rooftops of Vieux Lyon, across the Saône and the Presqu’île, to the hills beyond. At dusk the city lights begin to accumulate in the valley below, and the room achieves a particular quality of beauty that no interior design can replicate. Chef John Leon, working alongside Executive Chef David Delsart, produces a contemporary French menu that honours the terroir without being bound by it: grilled beef fillet from the region, langoustine quenelles of extraordinary delicacy, Arctic char from sustainable mountain sources, seasonal ravioli whose filling changes weekly.
The Terrace Menu is offered at lunch and represents excellent value for the setting — a three-course format at accessible pricing that allows the view to be enjoyed without the full commitment of a tasting menu evening. The evening menus are more elaborate and move through five to seven courses. The wine list focuses on the Rhône and Burgundy with appropriate seriousness. The service is attentive without intrusion, trained in the Relais & Châteaux manner that balances formality with warmth.
The restaurant is open Tuesday evenings, Wednesday through Saturday lunch and dinner. Closed Sunday and Monday. Access by car or taxi up the Montée Saint-Barthélemy; valet parking is available. Hotel guests staying at Villa Florentine are automatically placed on the reservation list, which means non-residents should book early — particularly for weekend evenings and any date with clear sky forecast.
Why It’s Perfect for a Proposal
The argument for Les Terrasses de Lyon as the city’s premier proposal venue is simply the view: when the city of Lyon unfolds below you at dusk, in the particular amber and cobalt light that the Saône valley produces on a clear evening, you do not need to say very much. The setting does the declaring. What follows — the Champagne, the Michelin-starred menu, the return to one of Villa Florentine’s rooms — is not incidental. If you have decided to propose in Lyon and you want the night to be unrepeatable, you are at the right table. Request the terrace when booking and specify the occasion.
